Soci-Economic Rights and Accountability project, SERAP, has revealed that data and digital rights are a subset of freedom of expression of privacy laws.
Speaking at a campaign aimed at engaging members of SERAP Accountability Club across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Deputy Director, SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare, noted that in a case where a citizen’s right has been breached or it’s likely to be breached, such person can approach the court to seek redress.
Kolawole therefore reiterated that if the court deems it fit that a citizen’s right has been infringed; such person has the right to get damages.
The campaign which was organized by SERAP, in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy, was aimed at discussing human rights, including rights to freedom of expression and assembly and to encourage students and student bodies to promote, advance and defend human rights.
The campaign also seeks to foster public support for freedom of expression and assembly and to protect and advance civic space by improving the accountability of government and respect for human rights in Nigeria.
