The National Data Protection Bureau, (NDPB) has revealed that regulating what Nigerians do online is not a means to put Road-Blocks to the activities carried out online, but to regulate the internet in a way to enhance the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
This was revealed by the Chief Executive Officer, National Data Protection Bureau, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, who represented the minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, at the launch of Data and Digital Rights Monitor, by the Socio-Economic and Accountability Project, (SERAP).
The Executive Officer noted that modalities adopted by the Bureau, requires licensing Data Protection Organizations (DPO’s), to help both the private and public sector, ensure that the rights, freedom and privileges of Nigerians are guaranteed, when they put out their information/data, online, for business purposes.
Olatunji also opined that all entities processing data in Nigeria are to have data protection officers, who would coordinate the activities of guaranteeing data privacy and protection in different organization.
On his part, the Director, Socio-Economic and Accountability Project, SERAP, Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni, who was also represented by the Deputy Director, SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare, revealed that Data and Digital right, is a subset of freedom of expression.
